Maybank launches ‘FC Barcelona’ debit and credit cards
KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank Group Bhd plans to issue 15,000 cobranded cards in the first year following the start of its partnership with Spanish football club FC Barcelona.
Maybank Head (Cards, Group Community Financial Services) B. Ravintharan said the bank planned to introduce the new cards to other regional markets with a strong following of the FC Barcelona team, with Singapore being the first, where the cards would introduced in January.
Maybank will offer FC Barcelona co-branded debit or credit cards to suit the various retail customer segments.
“These new cards are targeted at the devoted FC Barcelona supporters, who are also our emerging affluent customers.
“The benefits that come from using the new cards are numerous.
“They include exciting lifestyle rewards like trips to Camp Nou, the home stadium of FC Barcelona as well as attractive discounts for FC Barcelona match tickets and club merchandise,” he said at the launch, here, yesterday.
Maybank is the market leader in the cards business in Malaysia, with more than two million credit cards in circulation.
The bank also commands a 20.5 per cent share of the credit and charge card market.
As part of the partnership, Maybank will be the official bank for FC Barcelona in Malaysia and Singapore.
Through the “Maybank FC Barcelona Cards”, Maybank is targeting emerging affluent customers to further cement its leadership position in the cards segment.
Ravintharan added that the partnership with FC Barcelona represented another key step in the bank’s consumer banking strategy to ensure that it continued to build on its strong franchise in the region by offering distinct value propositions for different market segments.
The Maybank FC Barcelona Cards offer lifestyle rewards to cardholders, such as free-for-life annual fee, two per cent cash back on retail spend all year round for 10 months, capped at RM50 a month, 10 per cent cash back on retail spend for the months of May and August capped at RM100 a month, and an additional 0.10 per cent per annum interest rate on savings accounts for Barcelona debit cardholders who sign up for the Maybank2U Premier Account online.
