Lorry driver involved in fatal crash remanded
SEREMBAN: Police have remanded until tomorrow a lorry driver who is believed to have caused an accident at Km270.3 on the North-South Expressway on Friday that killed two people.
The remand order was issued by Seremban magistrate’s court assistant registrar Emysuriana Muhammad Subry yesterday, following a request by Nilai Traffic Enforcement and Investigation officer Inspector Mohd Syafiq Azmy.
The remand order will enable the police to investigate the man under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The man was seen wearing a blue T-shirt and shorts when he arrived at the court in a police van at 10.11am with other detainees.
Nilai district police chief Superintendent Zaldino Zaludin said on Saturday that the 59year-old was from Bukit Rotan, Selangor.
In the 5.30pm incident near the Seremban R&R (rest and recreation area) on Friday, Lau Lian Huat, 62, and his wife, Lim Ah Gim, 60, were killed due to head and body injuries.
The driver of the south-bound trailer was believed to have lost control of the vehicle after one of its tyres burst.
The lorry then hit the road divider before it swerved into the opposite lane and crashed into the couple’s Perodua Alza.
Two other vehicles, a Proton Waja and Proton Preve, were also involved in the accident, injuring three people.
A dashcam video of the accident has gone viral.
The driver of the Proton Waja, Mohamad Tahir Othman, 51, suffered severe injuries.
Azian Saleh, 45, and Abdul Rahim Ramlee, 52, who were travelling in the Proton Preve, suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the trailer fled after the accident but turned himself in at the Nilai district police station on Saturday.
