Najib condemns ‘cowardly attack’ in New York

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has labelled the deadly terrorist attack in New York City on Tuesday, in which a man driving a pick-up truck mowed down people on a cycling path in Lower Manhattan, as a cowardly attack on humanity.

“My thoughts and prayers for New York City. Innocent lives were lost today.

“We stand together against cowardly attacks on humanity,” he said on his Twitter account.

According to media reports, at least eight people were killed and 11 others seriously injured in the attack. A 29-year-old man from Uzbekistan, believed to be the driver of the truck, was shot by police and taken into custody.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry said no Malaysians were hurt in the attack.

In a statement yesterday, the ministry said the Consulate-General of Malaysia in New York would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to the Malaysian community in the city.

“The local authoritie­s are investigat­ing the incident. The ministry expresses its deepest sympathies and condolence­s to the families of the victims of the incident,” the statement read.
