ARMED forces personnel and veterans will soon enjoy a special quota on affordable housing units (RMM). Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein yesterday said the government was in discussions with RMM providers to aid soldiers and ex-servicemen in their applications for affordable housing.

He said RMM options included the 1Malaysia Civil Servants Housing Project (PPA1M), 1Malaysia People’s Housing Programme (PR1MA) and the First House Scheme.

“Our target is to build 25,000 housing units for armed forces personnel and veterans by 2030 through the Sasar programme, with the ratio of 70 per cent for personnel and 30 per cent for veterans.

“The Defence Ministry is cooperating with state governments. The construction of 5,972 houses is expected to commence between this year and next year,” he said in reply to a question from Tan Sri Annuar Musa (BN-Ketereh) at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Annuar had asked about housing projects for armed forces personnel and veterans, as well as schemes offered to them.

In August, Hishammuddin had announced the setting up of a programme to look into the housing needs of soldiers.

He said 78 sites had been identified for development, adding that the ministry had conducted a two-year study and would ensure that the housing project was completed by 2030. He said his ministry was planning to build a hospital for exservicemen.

“We have identified the location for the hospital for veterans and the deposit has been included in the 2018 Budget.”
