Drunken tourist falls from first floor

-

MELAKA: An intoxicated tourist can thank his lucky stars after surviving a fall from window of a cafe-cum-guesthouse here yesterday.

The 9am incident, which took place in Jalan Bunga Raya here caught tourists and locals by surprise when the Australian landed on an awning after falling from the first floor of the guesthouse.

He did not sustain any injuries. Jalan Kubu Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Razali Che Are said the department responded to a distress call at 9.15am and arrived at the scene at 9.19am.

“When we arrived, we saw the tourist lying on the awning, which is about 1.2m from the ground.

“It took us 10 minutes, using ropes and a ladder, to bring him to safety,” he said.

Earlier, people thought it was a suicide attempt, but later discovered that the 36-year-old man was drunk and had accidentally fallen out of the room’s window.

“If there hadn’t been an awning below the window where he fell from, he would have sustained serious injuries as the height from the window to the ground is about 3m,” said Razali.

The operation ended at 9.50am with the victim referred to Melaka Hospital for medical check-up.

The victim had moved into the guesthouse two days ago.

It is learnt that he was on a vacation with his friends here.
