‘Serve the people instead of eyeing MB post’

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan yesterday hit out at the opposition for tussling for the Johor menteri besar post instead of solving the people’s problems ahead of the next general election.

Gerakan secretary-general Datuk Liang Teck Meng said Pakatan Harapan should deliver on its programmes.

“They should be more realistic by settling the people’s problems instead of politicking,” he said at the headquarters here.

It was reported that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and secretary Dr Shahruddin Md Salleh were favoured candidates for the Johor menteri besar position if the opposition won the election.

It was rumoured that Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) deputy president Salahuddin Ayub and Johor chief Aminolhuda Hassan had also been listed as possible candidates for the seat.

Liang said the opposition pact’s drama over the matter had dragged on at the expense of its service to the people.

He said he was “not surprised that they were now taking their in-fighting to the state-level.”

He said squabbles over the post of Pakatan Harapan’s chairman had lasted more than a year.

He said most of Pakatan Harapan’s allies had “grudgingly” approved the appointment of PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the pact’s chairman.

He said such an approval was meaningless, but added that the opposition had the right to make its choice.

On Gerakan’s national delegates conference on Nov 12, he said 20 resolutions on social, economic, health and education issues would be passed.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, is expected to open the conference.

On seat allocation for Gerakan for the election, Liang said the party had “positive” talks with senior BN component party leaders since last year.
