SHAH ALAM: The almost threehour downpour yesterday flooded homes in several areas in Klang.

Describing the rain, which started at 3am, as unusually heavy, residents said the water level rose up to 1m and flooded their homes in fewer than 30 minutes.

Forty-five residents in Taman Manimaran in Padang Jawa took emergency leave to clean their homes and the belongings that they had salvaged.

“It is normal for my porch to be flooded whenever it rains as this is a low-lying area. But, the water entered the house today (yesterday. It usually subsides quickly, but not today,” said Kalaiselvam Supramani, a Taman Manimaran resident.

Civil servant Nurul Mukbin Sazlan, 46, said: “The rain was heavy. I had to wake my wife up to save whatever we could”.

Housewife M. Vedavali, 58, said flooding was a usual occurrence, but the situation had worsened lately.

In Taman Maznah, Sandanasamy Anthony, 83, said floodwaters at his home reached ankle-high.

“I have stayed here for 36 years and the floods have worsened over the years. Thankfully, the water subsided in two hours,” he told the New Straits Times.

Taman Maznah resident association chairman Mohd Darul Idzuar Ikhsan, 39, said residents in Jalan Songket 1 and 2 fell victim to floods at least six times a year.
