NSC committed to helping victims get back on their feet

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Security Council is committed to helping Penang flood victims get back on their feet via its National Disaster Relief Fund.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said the government would not set a limit in disbursing funds for this effort, especially during temporary relocation of evacuees.

“Nadma (National Disaster Management Agency) under the council has sufficient funds to help the victims. We coordinate temporary relocation, meals and post-flood clean-up. Compassionate funds will also be distributed to victims,” he said yesterday.

Shahidan said RM422 million had been distributed to victims of disasters since 2013.

He said any financial aid by the Federal Government must be channelled through the state’s Flood Management Committee.

“There have been no reports of help failing to reach flood relief centres in Penang.

“Until yesterday (Tuesday), 1,722 families were registered with Nadma.”

Natural Resources and Environment Deputy Minister Datuk Hamim Samuri said future designs of drainage system should take into consideration effects of global warming and climate change.

“Regarding a recommendation to build a smart tunnel in Penang, we are always open to suggestions. But, the feasibility of any project must first be considered.”
