Over 14.6 million register as voters until June this year

-

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 14,622,881 people have registered as voters as of June 30, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

She said a total of 3,797,785 of citizens aged 21 and above, who were eligible to vote, did not register as voters as of the same period.

“Between Jan 1 and June 30 this year, the number of new voters registered is 409,564 while a total of 152,832 voters applied to change their addresses,” she said when winding up debate on the Supply Bill 2018 at the policy stage for the department in the Dewan Rakyat here yesterday.

As of Sept 30, the Election Commission had appointed 205 assistant registrars to assist in the registration process.

She said the redelineation of electoral boundaries in peninsular Malaysia was being completed before the two-year period of redelineation expired on Sept 14.

It would then be submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.

Azalina said based on records at the Department of Insolvency, 23,036 people, aged between 25 and 34, were declared bankrupt from 2013 to August this year, while 1,109 of them were aged 25 and below. To date, she said, the average of bankruptcy cases involved 20,000 people a year.

The government, Azalina said, had introduced a policy to prevent a person from being easily declared a bankrupt through a rescue mechanism known as voluntary arrangement to avoid bankruptcy proceedings. Bernama
