Splendid beauty of Sarajevo

The Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque in Sarajevo.

ACOLD breeze greets us as we arrive in Sarajevo, the capital and cultural centre of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The word “Bosnia” conjures up images of the heartbreaking footage of the Bosnian War in 1992. Sarajevo’s landscape is embellished with mountainous terrain and medieval villages. Spectacular mountains dominate the terrain between Mostar and Sarajevo.

I fell in love with the old city of Bascarsija, Sarajevo’s old bazaar and the historical and cultural centre of the city. The Gazi Husrevbey Mosque is one of the most important Islamic structures in the country .

A visit to the tunnel of hope is a must.

The old town of Bascarsija. It is now also known as a war museum displaying war photos, a short film about the war and lots more. The highlight of the museum is the chance to enter the tunnel, where visitors can walk/crawl through 20 metres of the original 800m tunnel which runs under the runway.

You will also gain some insight into the Bosnian war. It is truly heart wrenching just looking at the displays. Shrapnel holes still mark this museum.

Despite all the bullet hole strewn buildings, I find it hard to picture Sarajevo as anything but peaceful. It’s just so pretty! I wish I could stay longer to explore this beautiful city.
