‘Ensure tahfiz schools registered with Education Ministry’

-

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry and relevant agencies must work to ensure tahfiz institutions that use the national curriculum are registered with the ministry, in line with the Education Act 1996 (Act 550).

The agencies include the Islamic Development Department, state religious departments and tahfiz associations.

This was decided in the tahfiz schools task force’s high-level committee meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday.

Zahid said the meeting was to review follow-up actions taken by the agencies following its first meeting in September.

“On Oct 4, the cabinet meeting agreed to allocate RM30 million, in addition to the RM30 million allocation announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in the 2017 Budget to repair tahfiz institutions nationwide.

“The one-off allocation was channelled to the Implementation Coordination Unit to coordinate distribution to agencies improving and upgrading the security aspects of tahfiz institutions,” Zahid said.

Zahid said one of the aspects that needed serious attention was ensuring upgrading works were based on specifications set by the Fire and Rescue Department.

In the 2018 Budget, Najib announced that RM50 million would be allocated to GiatMara for repair and maintenance of the wiring systems of registered tahfiz schools nationwide.

Zahid said the GiatMara Skills Training Scheme would be introduced to train tahfiz students to be more skilled in certain areas.
