Global perspective for SEGi students

-

THE world today is becoming more interconnected than it was several years ago. Therefore, it is necessary to educate students with a global understanding to tackle challenges in the interdependent world.

As one of the most established and trusted higher education providers in Malaysia, SEGi University and Colleges realise the importance of global perspective.

It is paramount to their educational approach.

Therefore, SEGi places great emphasis on attracting international students to expand the local students’ international exposure and global perspective.

Currently, SEGi has five campuses nationwide, with its flagship campus located in Kota Damansara and the remaining four in Subang Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kuching, Sarawak.

With close to 25,000 local and international students, SEGi brings the lessons and experiences of the world into its campuses. The institution believes that students are exposed to the global community by listening, hearing and understanding the story of others.

It begins when they meet people from all over the world.

SEGi hosts a large international community of students from India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Oman, Saudi Arabia, China, Egypt, Mauritius, Pakistan, Bangladesh and many more. Two Indonesian students — Novita and Hilary explained what led to their decision to pursue tertiary education at SEGi.

“I am impressed with the facilities. The best thing here is its international students’ community as they allow students to showcase their best culture.

“On top of that, there is always a hive of activities within the campus,” said Novita, who is currently pursuing the Bachelor of Business Management specialising in Marketing.

Meanwhile, her best friend, Hilary who is studying in Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Chemical Engineering loves the experience of meeting new friends and participating in extracurricular activities apart from classroom learning.

“iChemE Club is my favourite society as it allows engineering students to interact and participate in different activities to improve our chemical engineering skills,” she explained.

She echoed a similar sentiment to Novita, praising the facilities and amenities, in particular the healthcare services such as SEGi Oral Health Centre and SEGi EyeCare.

Another international student, Ma Xuan from China shared her experience at SEGi.

“Prior to studying here, I have always had trouble speaking in front of a crowd but through endless presentation sessions, I am now more confident to speak up.

“SEGi is recognised in China and also globally, hence I came here on my own. It is also because I wanted to learn to be more independent,” said Ma.

The student affairs division in respective campuses help to enhance the learning experience and facilitate multicultural interaction through a series of activities held allyear long.

For example, among some of the events aimed at promoting multi-cultural understanding are International Food Fair, International Cultural Night, Mid-Autumn Tea Ceremony Workshop and many more. These activities allow students to learn from cultures that are vastly different from their countries of origin.
