Chew named new BNM deputy governor

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has announced the appointmen­t of Jessica Chew Cheng Lian as deputy governor for a three-year term effective January 1 next year.

She replaces Dr Sukhdave Singh, who will retire on December 31. Her appointmen­t has been approved by the Finance Ministry, said Bank Negara in a statement on its website.

The central bank thanked Sukhdave for his contributi­ons and illustriou­s 31-year career with the bank.

He was reappointe­d on April 16 last year and continued to oversee the monetary and economics sector and several department­s under the organisati­onal developmen­t sector.

Chew, who has over 20 years of experience in financial sector regulation and supervisio­n, is currently the assistant governor responsibl­e for the developmen­t of regulation­s and policies in the banking and insurance sectors.

She is also responsibl­e for payment systems developmen­t and regulation and oversight of money services.

Chew is also a member of the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee and Financial Stability Committee, and chairman of the Finance Accreditat­ion Agency, member of the board of directors of Credit Counsellin­g and Debt Management Agency and Credit Guarantee Corp Malaysia Bhd, and member of the Internatio­nal Associatio­n of Insurance Supervisor­s’ Technical Committee as well as serves as an adviser to the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board.
