Benefits of sheet masks

-

BEAUTY experts always advocate the importance of maintaining a good skincare routine for healthy skin. If you’re genetically blessed with flawless and healthy skin, good for you but having healthy skin depends on your daily habits too.

We’ve heard it all, the three-step routine — wash, tone and moisturise — as well as drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen every day and use face masks at least once a week.

I don’t know about you but I’ve always ignored the mask part simply because I am not a fan of it. Plus, I often thought the basic three-step routine was sufficient to maintain good skin.

Lately, however, I’ve been going makeup free except for a layer of lipstick simply because I want to let my skin rest and breathe.

Maybe it’s the weather but my skin has been extra dry lately despite applying my usual skincare routine on a daily basis.

In an attempt to fix the problem, I went to a few beauty shops to purchase some face sheet masks.

My sister, who practically wears sheet masks every day, tells me they are soaked in nutrient-rich solutions, hence the ingredients will help moisten my skin.

Convinced it would help me fix my dry skin, I bought a few and put them on my face the next few nights.

Did they make a difference? Well, let’s just say I will never take face masks for granted again.

Initially, I wasn’t too fond of sheet masks as I felt they were a hassle. But as I got used to them, I found that they were convenient to apply. They definitely made a huge difference to my skin. All the more reason to go make-up free a little longer!

The best part is, there are various options and the prices range from as low as RM4 per piece.

Whether you opt for aloe vera, cucumber, honey or fruity flavours, there are many to choose from.

They are convenient and easy to pack for travelling. Use them while you read or watch TV and let your face soak in the benefits.

Now before you go ahead and buy yourself a whole bunch of masks, be sure to take note of these mistakes you want to avoid.

NOT PREPPING SKIN

Logically, you wouldn’t want to layer on a mask over your face when it’s full of make-up. Be sure to apply the mask on a well-cleansed and toned face to achieve optimum results. You don’t want to mix whatever bacteria that is present on your make-up with the natural, healthy ingredients on the sheet mask.

APPLYING MOISTURISER

You’ve cleansed and toned but there’s no need to apply a moisturiser just yet. Beauty experts advise saving the moisturiser for later.

LEAVING THE MASK ON FOR TOO

LONG

Now this is a mistake I’m guilty of. While the average time to leave the mask on is about 20 to 30 minutes, I previously believed that the longer it sat on my face, the more my skin would soak up its benefits. Let your skin soak up all the beneficial ingredients in the sheet mask.

One time, I also fell asleep with the mask on. This is a big no-no. Experts say that if the mask is left on for far longer than it should, it can damage skin. So set your timer!

WASHING YOUR FACE AFTERWARDS

I did this once too, only to find out that my “masking” efforts had been wasted. When you wash your face while the serum from the mask is still on the skin, it washes away

FORGETTING YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

Once the serum in the mask is all soaked in, it’s also good to finish the routine with a moisturiser. The moisturiser will seal in all that goodness into your skin and prevent it from evaporating.
