FOUR people, including the nephew of the Selangor menteri besar, have been remanded for seven days for their alleged involvement in illegal sand and gravel mining in Selangor yesterday.

An investigation launched by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) revealed that a sand mining company had allegedly bribed local government officers in Kajang, where the company had been operating since 2014.

It was understood that the bribe was allegedly an inducement not to take action against the illegal activities.

The four were remanded at the Sessions Court here at 9.30am, said an MACC spokesman.

They will be remanded until Dec 6.

Magistrate Ainna Sherina Saipol Amin granted the remand order under Section 16 (b)(B) of the Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 for soliciting bribery.

Wearing “Lokap SPRM” bright orange T-shirts, the four suspects, comprising two company directors, one site manager and an advertising agency employee, covered their faces as they were escorted out of the court by MACC personnel.

The suspects, aged between 34 and 67, were arrested in a special operation, which started at 10am on Wednesday.

Following the arrests, MACC froze RM4 million from the company’s bank account.
