Melaka inaday

The state has a lot more to offer visitors than just heritage buildings and dodol, writes

The Islamic Religious Complex and Lower Syariah Court is a fine example of Melaka architecture. which I almost miss as the site is situated on the other side of the road. A massive tapered granite stone and several smaller ones stand upright in a fenced up area. These megalithic stones as well as those found in Negri Sembilan, though not as spectacular as the Nazca Lines in southern Peru, are steeped in mystery. Archaeologists have speculated that they may date from prehistoric times.

In M.C. Sheppard’s article titled which was published in the May 1936 issue of the author states: “The most common arrangement of these stones is a double row running east and west: in the largest known collection (at Kemuning), eight rows exist side by side. In every collection, there is at least one stone that is considerably taller than the others, in many cases, it stands at the end of the row, its opposite or ‘pair’ is smaller but above the average is size.”

Who built them? What was their purpose? These questions flit like a butterfly in my mind as I proceed to Cendol Bakar Kuala Selangor which has a branch near Simpang Ampat.

chases away the butterfly. I am sitting under a thatchedroofed eating area and is surrounded by stalls selling pisang goreng cheese, taufu bakar, nasi ayam madu, coconut shake, keropok lekor and even kuih udang! The palm sugar in the cendol’s coconut milk releases caramel-like top notes and ends with a robust smoky lift. I finish it off with nasi ayam madu and some snacks.

TO THE TOUCH CITY

Cruising along the highway, my eyes rest on a block of building with Dutch gable. Out of curiosity, I pull over to enter its car park. As I pass a monument depicted as a chicken sitting on a rectangular box, I spot a sign Freeport A’Famosa Outlet beneath a clock face on the building’s facade wall.

Minutes later, I’m strolling along a walkway between two rows of stores separated Shop till you drop at Freeport A’Famosa Outlet.
