Penang PKR leader urges term limit on CM’s post
GEORGE TOWN: A Penang PKR Youth leader yesterday urged the state government to impose a two-term limit on the chief minister’s post, which is held by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
Bukit Mertajam PKR Youth chief Mohd Ikhwan Nasser Mohamad Isa said DAP should set an example after Pakatan Harapan on Sunday agreed to a two-term limit for the prime minister’s post.
“We welcome the 13 promises made at Pakatan Harapan’s annual convention and we want to see the fifth promise, setting a limit for the prime minister’s post, to begin here at the state level.
“This will send a clear message to the people that Pakatan Harapan is committed to fulfilling its promises.”
Ikhwan said such a move would demonstrate Pakatan Harapan’s readiness to carry out the comprehensive reforms in its manifesto.
Pakatan Harapan secretariat chief Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah had announced that the pact would introduce the twoterm limit should it come to power to promote a “healthier democracy”.
Pakatan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad expressed his intention to expand the two-term limit for the posts of chief minister and menteri besar.
Two years ago, Tanjung Bungah DAP assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu spearheaded an initiative to limit the tenure of the Penang chief minister to two terms, but failed.
