2 TEEN MOSQUITO BIKE RIDERS KILLED
Driver, 38, held after ploughing car into 4 boys returning from ‘kompang’ class
TWO boys were killed and another injured when they were hit by a car while riding “mosquito bikes” in Jalan Kampung Maju Jaya, Pekan Nanas here, on Wednesday night.
In the 11pm incident, Ibnu Ahmad Ahmad Nais, 16, and Muhammad Amiruddin Abd Majid, 13, died when the car driven by a 38-year-old man ploughed into them and their two friends, who were returning home from kompang class.
The third boy survived with a broken shoulder while the fourth was uninjured.
Fazli Hashim, 36, said he saw the mosquito bike riders cruising along the main road moments before hearing a crash.
“As I turned to look, I saw a bike flying into the air. I ran towards them and saw that one victim was unhurt.
“But upon checking further, I found three others bleeding from their heads,” he said.
Ibnu Ahmad’s grandmother, Bechik Kadasek, 73, said her grandson had made a passing remark to her once that he would soon join his dead grandfather (in the grave).
“I did not expect his remark to come true,” she said.
The families of the deceased claimed the bodies yesterday morning.
The driver of the car involved in the crash had been remanded for four days.
District police chief Superintendent Zakaria Abdul Rahman said investigations would be carried out under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless driving.
“Initial investigations revealed that the incident happened when the driver, who was coming from Ulu Pulai heading to Pekan Nanas, tried to overtake another vehicle in front of him.
“In doing so, the vehicle appeared to have crashed into the group of youths, who were riding the bicycles by the road side. It was raining.”
This is the second fatal incident in the state involving mosquito bike riders.
Eight boys were killed after a car hit a group of mosquito bike riders in Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, near Jalan Mahmoodiah, Johor Baru, on Feb 18 last year. Additional reporting by Togi Marzuki
