2 CHARGED WITH RAPE, EXTORTION

The 2 mechanics and friend also allegedly impersonat­ed religious officers

TWO men accused of raping a woman and extorting the same woman and her boyfriend by pretending to be religious officers from the Pahang Islamic Religious Department claimed trial here.

Mechanics Muhd Azrul Nizam Azri and Mohd Kamaruzzam­an Mohd Kamarul Ariffin were charged with rape, extortion and impersonat­ing civil servants last month.

They were hauled before the Sessions Court and two magistrate’s courts where the charges were read and their pleas recorded.

Before Sessions Court judge Siti Aminah Ghazali, Azrul and Kamaruzzam­an, both 30, were calm when they claimed trial to raping the 20-year-old victim at a house in Lorong Seri Setali 89 here between 2am and 3.30am on Dec 29.

The duo could be jailed up to 20 years and whipped if convicted under Section 376 (1) of the Penal Code.

Siti Aminah granted RM8,000 bail with one surety to each accused and fixed Feb 15 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Norfatinah Abu Bakar prosecuted.

Later, before magistrate Nordiana Abd Aziz, Azrul and Kamaruzzam­an pleaded not guilty to extorting the victim, who works as a shop assistant, and her boyfriend, at Teluk Cempedak beach here at 10.30pm on Dec 28.

Fearing for their safety, she surrendere­d her Nokia 3 handphone, worth RM609, and RM200 to the duo.

If convicted under Section 384 of the code, Azrul and Kamaruzzam­an face up to 10 years’ jail, a fine, or both.

Nordiana allowed RM4,000 bail with one surety for each accused and set Feb 15 for mention. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Shahrizzat Amadan prosecuted.

Later, before magistrate Nurunaim Abdullah, the accused and their friend Mohd Badrul Rashidan Hanipha, 19, claimed trial to impersonat­ing public servants at the same place and time.

The trio were alleged to have pretended to be religious officers from the Pahang Islamic Religious Department.

If found guilty, the three may be jailed not more than two years, fined, or both, under Section 170 of the code.

Nurunaim granted RM3,000 bail with one surety to each accused and fixed Jan 25 for mention.

Azrul, a father of three, also pleaded not guilty to keeping stolen property.

He faces a maximum five-year jail sentence, fine, or both, if convicted under Section 411 of the code.

Nurunaim allowed him bail of RM3,000 with one surety and fixed Feb 15 for mention.
