Govers aims to be UniKL’s lethal weapon

-

KIEREN Govers wants to make waves for Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) in the Malaysian Hockey League (MHL) Premier Division which starts today.

The former Australian international grabbed attention when he netted five goals in the 10-0 thrashing of Selangor in the first round of the Alagendra Cup last week.

“I think it is great for foreign players like us to come experience the challenge here,” said Govers.

“Our appearance also helps the local players to gain experience.”

UniKL open their league campaign against Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on Friday at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

“The opening league match is going to be hard. We have to combine well.

“Obviously, we want to go far but coach Arul Selvaraj wants us to take it game by game,” he said.

When asked why he failed to score after the five goals against Selangor in the P. Alagendra Cup, Govers said: “I was lucky enough to score five goals in the first match.”

“Great team play allowed me to convert. I scored in the second match as well but the goal was credited to another team member.

“To be honest, it does not bother me if I don’t score, as long as we win and play well I’m happy, scoring is a bonus.

“Yes it’s going to be my job to try and score in the league and I will try hard,” Govers added.
