MACC arrests duo for allegedly soliciting RM3,000 from man
THE Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) detained two men for claiming to be Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) personnel and allegedly soliciting a RM3,000 bribe.
A source said the suspects, aged 28 and 29, were arrested separately here at 4.20pm and 8.50pm on Thursday.
It is understood that on Jan 2, the 29-year-old suspect allegedly solicited RM3,000 from a man who was facing a fine for having carried out improper modification of the meter box in his home.
“The payment was supposed to (be in exchange for a) 50 per cent discount of the total fine.
“However, the man lodged a report with MACC for further action.”
Based on the report, MACC planned to entrap the duo and arranged for the man to pay RM1,000 to the 29-year-old suspect.
“After the suspect received the RM1,000 bribe on Thursday, and before he could hand over a RM500 cut to the 28-year-old, MACC officers emerged and arrested the duo,” the source said.
The case is being investigated under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009 for soliciting and accepting bribes, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and a fine of five times the amount of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
Special Remand Court Assistant Registrar Nur Haryatie Mohd Saini allowed both suspects to be remanded for five days from yesterday to allow MACC to complete the investigation.
