The Ming Thing to produce show for tonton

-

UNMISTAKABLE with his toothy grin and “high hair”, Ho Ming Yue, 23, who forms one-half of YouTube sensations The Ming Thing, has great news for their 270,000-odd subscribers.

Come April, the actor, director and online content creator, and his older brother Ming Han, 26, will be producing their first project for Malaysia’s largest homegrown video streaming service, tonton.

Yet to be named, the series with four, 20-minute episodes is a “thriller adventure”, which also combines elements of comedy and “the l atest parodies of Malaysian consumer trends”.

“We were impressed with JinnyBoy TV’s production, romantic comedy By My Side, which came out on tonton during the Merdeka month last year.

“So, Ming Han and I figured we could also work with tonton,” said Ming Yue at the preview of ton- ton’s first Chinese New Year telemovie Singing In The Spring at Quill City Mall, Jalan Sultan Ismail in Kuala Lumpur last weekend.

Ming Yue, who is a marketing graduate from Taylor’s University, said his brother suggested that they did something entirely different from JinnyBoy TV.

“Since we grew up enjoying adventures and thrillers on the big screen, especially the ones from Hollywood, we decided to combine both elements for a series that can keep viewers excited and amused at the same time.”

The brothers were fortunate that tonton general manager Loh Ben Jern was one of their ardent followers.

“When he approached us, suggesting that we create a special series or telemovie for tonton this year, we were thrilled!” said Ming Yue, adding that having a production on tonton would greatly extend their nationwide influence.

And, while the plot is still under wraps, the brothers revealed that filming would begin in early April, mainly in the Klang Valley.

“We’ll have a mix of well-known actors and newcomers, and both of us are likely to have cameo roles, as we have always done so in most of our productions,” explained Ming Yue.

The Ming Thing was formed in 2012, when Ming Han chose to vlog about the car park at his university.

It received a few thousand views overnight, and they roped in videographers Bryan Lim and Raffi Th’ng to assist them.

Their first major videos on YouTube were “S*** Boyfriends Say” and “Alone Forever”, produced in 2013 which saw more than 450,000 views.

Singing In The Spring which will be screened on Feb 16 stars Ming Yue, model and actress Venice Min, television host Orange Tan, Emily Chen, Sherlyn Seo, pop group Thomas Jack and singer Hao Ren. By Dennis Chua
