NATIONAL doubles player Goh V Shem has called on local fans to turn up in numbers and create a hostile atmosphere in the Asia Team Championship, which starts today, at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Alor Star.

Malaysia play Thailand in their opening Group C today. Taiwan and minnows Myanmar are the other teams in the pool.

V Shem said: “We need the fans to support and motivate us against Thailand.”

“Basically, we want our supporters to rattle our opponents,” said the 28-year-old.

V Shem said Thailand will be tough as they have a balanced team.

“We want to top the group and qualify for the Thomas Cup in May.

“Taiwan are also strong. They have good pairs in Chen Hung Ling-Wang Chi Lin and Lee Jhe Huei-Lee Yang.

“Tan Wee Kiong and I need to be consistent and play to our strength as there will be no easy matches.

V Shem-Wee Kiong are expected to face Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren in today’s tie.

Team manager Datuk Ng Chin Chai is confident that Malaysia can top their group in the men’s competition.

Chin Chai, also the secretary of the BA of Malaysia (BAM), said all players are in good form and are injury-free.

“Based on our strength, we have a good chance of winning Group C.”

The men’s team comprise Lee Chong Wei, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, Lee Zii Jia, Soong Joo Ven, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, Teo Ee Yi-Yew Sin and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
