Home Ministry mulling biometric identification platform for agencies
KULAI: The Home Ministry is considering having its agencies use a similar biometric identification platform.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the installation of a biometric identification system at the country’s entry points would not only record data of visitors entering and exiting, but would also help to fight crime, such as human trafficking and cross-border crime.
“The ministry’s goal is to ensure all its agencies, including the Immigration Department, use a similar biometric identification platform,” Nur Jazlan said.
“We are open to the proposal to integrate our system with those used by companies such as AirAsia,” he said after launching a facial recognition system called Fast Clearance Experience System (Faces) at AirAsia’s departure gate at the Senai International Airport yesterday.
At present, Nur Jazlan said the ministry was using the National Immigration Control System that consisted biometric eye (retina), face and fingerprint scans, implemented by the Im- migration Department.
“Many countries will be using biometric methods in the identification of passengers in the future.”
He said the biometric identification system could also be used to facilitate the movement of people at the Johor Causeway and the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.
AirAsia digital, transformation and corporate services deputy chief executive officer Aireen Omar said the first phase of Faces involved AirAsia passengers on domestic routes.
