THE Fire and Rescue Department has spent RM2.47 million to build houses under the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) between 2012 and last year. Its deputy director-general (development), Datuk Amer Yusof, said the department had carried out 27 projects to construct houses and renovated 100 houses.

He said in Negri Sembilan, the department had constructed 12 houses between 2012 and last year under NBOS.

“The construction of a new house costs RM40,000, while renovating each house costs RM13,000. This year, a house will be built in Seremban, while three others will be renovated.”

Amer said the construction and renovation of houses were based on the gotong-royong concept.

He said it would not take more than two months to build a house.

He said this at the handing over of keys to the owners of new homes constructed under NBOS in Kampung Parit Seberang, Tanjung Ipoh, yesterday,

Pilah assemblyman Datuk Norhayati Omar handed over the keys. Present was state Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis.

Since taking part in the NBOS programme, the Fire and Rescue Department has built 160 houses nationwide at the cost of RM7.2 million. Another 139 houses were renovated at the cost of RM1.6 million.

Zainon Akli, 61, thanked the department for providing her with a new home.

“I had been staying at a dilapidated house for 20 years, and had to place buckets under the roof each time it rains as it leaked”.

The construction of Zainon’s house began in December and was completed last month. It saw the participation of 12 of the state department’s personnel.
