Churchill’s moment

THIS political drama was released in the US last year and received high praise. Its success was mainly due to the expertise of director Joe Wright and his decision to put Gary Oldman in the leading role.

It follows the early days of Winston Churchill as Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Wright takes us on a journey through a stressful time in British history when the Nazis controlled most of Europe and almost threatened the United Kingdom’s existence.

Darkest Hour begins in May 1940 and spans four weeks. It gives viewers an insight into Churchill’s challenges in outwitting his political rivals. He must make a fateful decision: To negotiate with Hitler and save the British people, or rally the nation and fight.

Thanks to Wright’s expertise, viewers are able to understand what Churchill was going through at that time.

It’s dramatic, dark and depressing but Wright playfully sprinkles some heartwarming moments between Churchill’s family and between him and his wife, Clemmie (played by Kristin Scott Thomas).

I liked that the filmmakers included a key scene that showed Churchill sneaking into the London Underground to talk to the people and ask their opinion about what was happening in their country.

It makes him appear relatable and shows his softer side, despite his no-nonsense personality.

Lily James plays Elizabeth Layton, Churchill’s secretary. It’s a refreshing change from her role in Baby Driver. She portrays a daring woman who is extremely dedicated to her job and feels nothing but respect for her boss.

Darkest Hour is a riveting thriller although we pretty much know the ending.

Character actor Oldman suits the role immensely and makes the difficult task seem easy. Wright directs with a keen artist’s eye, making the camera fall in love with Oldman.

It’s astonishing to think that all the events of this film took place within a month. It’s not easy to make a historical film showcasing Churchill’s flaws and greatness but Wright proved to be up for the challenge.
