THE people should put their hopes in a strong party and not in a party that can’t stand on its own and has to rely on others. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said people should put hope in a party that was strong, like Umno and Barisan Nasional.

“As long as Umno exists, the fate of Malays and other communities in Malaysia will be assured and the country will continue to progress,” said Najib.

He also said Umno was not just a political party, but a sacred political institution.

“Umno is the most successful party in Malaysia and a party that Malays rely on. I realise that even though I am the prime minister, without the 3.5 million Umno members behind me, I would not be able to be the leader that can bring change to the people.”

Najib said this in his speech at an event with the Pagoh community in Felda Moakil here.

Present were his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and Felda chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad.

At the function, Najib presented 721 Felda Maokil settlers with grants to 80.93ha of land for housing and another 3,162ha for oil palm planting.

Several settlers thanked the government, which they said always looked after their welfare.

Zainal Harun, 66, said he was ecstatic and grateful.

“This is the result of my hard work over the past 30 years, but I am also grateful that I have been given this chance to change my family’s lifestyle,” he said.

Md Salehan Sabari, 62, said the gift of the land grant was a recognition by the government of his hard work all this while.
