SL1M to hold open job interview at UMS

-

Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be the first destination in East Malaysia for this year’s 1Malaysia Training Scheme (SL1M) open job interview.

SL1M, which started in June 2011, is a programme under the Prime Minister’s Department Economic Planning Unit that aims to boost employability. The two-day programme, beginning March 17, will be held at UMS’ Dewan Canselor between 7am and 6pm.

Its secretariat head, Norashikin Ismail, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan was scheduled to officiate the event.

She said this at a press conference on the event at Philea Mines Beach Resort in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.

She said the programme would offer 10,000 placements for training and employment by more than 20 government-linked companies.

Companies include the Malayan Banking Bhd, UMW Holdings Bhd, Boustead Holdings Bhd, Sime Darby Industrial Sdn Bhd and Petroliam Nasional Bhd.

Norashikin welcomed participation from companies in Sabah for the event.

She said since SL1M’s inception until December last year, some 144,440 people had benefited from the programme.

She encouraged graduates and jobseekers to attend the event with an open mind when it came to employment as opportunities were aplenty.

“The opportunities might be outside their hometown, so they need to be ready to take up the challenge.”

She said graduates for the next SL1M intake would benefit from an increased monthly allowance from RM1,500 to RM2,000, which came into effect on March 1.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak last week. One of the companies that has enforced the new allowance is Pembinaan Jaya Zira Sdn Bhd.

Norashikin said the allowance was a compulsory amount to be paid to SL1M trainees.

“If the firms fail to pay the amount, the trainees can lodge a report with the secretariat.”

She said companies needed to implement SL1M in their bid to secure government contracts as directed by Najib.

Other than opportunities for employment, the programme will also feature motivational and entertainment sessions with celebrities Faizal Tahir, Kumpulan Zero, Stacy, Marsha Milan, Aunty Patrin, Ara Johari, Andi Bernadee, Farish Aziz, Samantha Miles and Kupi Kupi FM crews.
