Malaysia fall to Australia

- Jugjet Singh

No 1 Australia defeated Malaysia 3-1 in a highly entertaining Azlan Shah Cup match in Ipoh yesterday.

The 12th-ranked Malaysia did not have a single shot at the Australian goal until the third quarter.

Australia scored through Corey Weyer (10th minute), Dylan Wotherspoon (29th) and Aaron Kleisnhmidt (43rd). Marhan Jalil responded for Malaysia in the 53rd minute.

In an earlier match, Olympic champions Argentina came back from two goals down to beat Ireland 5-3.

World No 10 Ireland took a twogoal lead after just 17 minutes. Shane O’ Donoghue (12th), Sean Murray (17th) and Eugene Magee (52nd) scored for the Irish. Argentina, however, were too hot to handle.

Penalty corner specialist Gonzalo Peillat netted his second hattrick of the tournament in the 20th, 23rd, 47th minutes while Lucas Vila (22nd) and Juan Gilardi (30th) added the other goals for Argentina.

Peillat also scored three goals in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over India.

Argentina coach Rolando Rivero said: “In the first half, Ireland were really good and they subsequently took the lead. In the second half, we made adjustments and responded well.”

Argentina will play Malaysia tomorrow.

“We know it is going to be tough with Malaysia as they have home ground advantage,” said Rivero.

RESULTS: India 1 England 1, Ireland 3 Argentina 5, Malaysia 1 Australia 3.

TOMORROW: England v Ireland (4pm), India v Australia (6pm), Malaysia v Argentina (8.30pm).
