PM: Youth can have global view with religious focus

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has urged the younger generation to adopt a global mindset without sacrificin­g religion and culture.

He said the government had formulated policies that benefited youth, which had improved Malaysia’s social mobility.

“We create policies that offer education and jobs to youth. The government has never raised fees at local higher education institutio­ns because we want our children to have access to education.

“About 90 per cent of tuition fees at local universiti­es are subsidised by the government. Youth also have a chance to pursue tertiary education at private universiti­es and colleges.

“The government’s policy has increased social mobility. It is important for youth to have a global mindset, while emphasisin­g religion and culture,” he said at a gathering of 400 university students at a Welfare Associatio­n of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) and Siswa programme at Seri Perdana here yesterday.

Najib spoke about his youth and how he coped with cultural difference­s when he studied in the United Kingdom, as well as how the experience made him stronger.

He said other figures who went through hardship and became successful included Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, Treasury secretaryg­eneral Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah, Internatio­nal Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and Permodalan Nasional Bhd group chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar.
