PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday launched a convoy of 100 youths and student leaders who will reach out to 200,000 Bumiputeras with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia qualifications and help them pursue their studies in tertiary institutions and skills training institutes.

The Bumiputera Education Tour 2018 (JBP 2018) convoy will identify this group from among SPM leavers between 2013 and last year in 28 locations in 92 parliamentary constituencies.

Najib launched the convoy, organised by Yayasan Destini Anak Bangsa (YDAB) and Gerakan Pendidikan Bumiputera Malaysia with the cooperation of the 4B Youth Movement, in the compound of the Prime Minister’s Office.

The convoy, comprising a bus, six four-wheel-drive vehicles, two vans and multipurpose vehicles transporting the secretariat of 100 youth leaders and student leaders, will arrive at its first destination in Bagan Datuk, Perak, on March 24.

Deputy Prime Minister and Bagan Datuk member of parliament Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will officiate JBP 2018 at SM Sains Bagan Datuk.

The tour will end in Sarawak on May 1.

JBP is Najib’s initiative to help underprivileged Malaysians boost their children’s education.

YDAB patron and JPB Parent Committee chairman Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar said JBP 2018 had set a target of placing 65,000 Bumiputera SPM leavers in 37 institutions of higher learning and skills institutes, as well as public universities.

He said the tour, which started in 2016, had assisted 100,000 Bumiputera SPM leavers.

“Our goal is to ensure that students are given counselling so that they can pursue their studies in colleges, polytechnics or public universities in accordance with their academic performance.”

Sahol Hamid said JPB 2018 focused not only on academic but also skills training for Bumiputera youth.

“The tour follows the success of the programme in 2016 aimed at promoting education and providing opportunities for underprivileged people to pursue their studies.”
