Data breach probe ongoing, says Jailani
investigation into the breach of the personal data of 46.2 million mobile phone users last year is ongoing, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said witnesses had been called to have their statements recorded by the police and the Personal Data Protection Department.
“The outcome of the investigation will be submitted to the Attorney-General’s
Chambers for action,” he said in response to a question from Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai) on whether action had been taken against those involved in the leakage.
Last November, lowyat.net published an article on the theft of personal data, citing the leakage of 50 million pieces of personal data from telecommunications companies and 17 million from job search sites.
The website said 46.2 million mobile phone numbers from local telecommunications companies were leaked online.
Jailani said the ministry took the data breach seriously and had conducted inspections on the personal data system of companies.
“We have held meetings with telecommunications companies and conducted awareness programmes on the issue.”
He said last year, the courts meted out sentences in three personal data breach cases and five similar cases were tried before the courts this year.
