TUN Dr Mahathir Mohamad should stop trying to cheat the people by twisting facts and admit that he had shares in The Loaf, which recently stopped operating.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said he had been told that Dr Mahathir owned RM10 million worth of shares in the premium bakery.

“He is ashamed that the bakery has closed down. Since 2005 when it was opened, it has been suffering losses... it’s already been 13 years.

“Now that it has closed down, he wants to blame the government. So, don’t listen to what Dr Mahathir says, as he likes to twist the facts. There have been many things that he has done and twisted facts (about),” he said.

Hamzah said this at the Umno Batu Kurau building before witnessing the submission of Umno application forms by 32 former members of PKR and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia from Kampung Anak Kurau.

The former opposition members were said to have quit their parties and applied to join Umno after losing faith in their leaders.

Hamzah said he was disappointed with the attitude of Dr Mahathir, who could be clearly seen to have no principles in politics.

“Umno’s fight has always been consistent. We fight for religion, race and nation, while working closely with other Barisan Nasional component parties. Prior to this, Dr Mahathir had said anyone who followed DAP was a traitor to the race, yet now he works side by side with (DAP adviser) Lim Kit Siang.

“In the past, he said all sorts of things about (PKR de facto chief) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, but now he can ‘sit down’ with Anwar (in the opposition camp),” he said.

Meanwhile, Barisan Nasional strategic communications deputy director Eric See-To said the former prime minister had said The Loaf was his company, but now that it had ceased operations, he was denying it.

“This is false. The Companies Commission of Malaysia’s (SSM) records show that Dr Mahathir owns 10.062 million shares in M & M Consolidated Sdn Bhd, which is the owner of The Loaf. He is also the director of the company.

“He claims that he owns only 200 shares in a tobacco company and Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).

“This is false. He is the owner of Euroala Sdn Bhd and Evektor companies, which are both airline manufacturers,” he said on his Facebook page.

Eric also said Dr Mahathir was the third largest shareholder of The Palace of The Golden Horses hotel in Seri Kembangan.

He enclosed SSM records that showed the involvement of Dr Mahathir in M & M Consolidated and the other companies in his statement.

Responding to the closure of The Loaf yesterday, Dr Mahathir denied his involvement with the bakery after it ceased operations.

The closure of the bakery was announced through a notice uploaded to social media dated April 9, which was addressed to its customers.

The notice did not state why the outlet was closed.

The management only said it was satisfied that The Loaf had achieved its primary objective of improving the quality of breads and the bakery industry.
