GMMF URGES U.N. PROBE INTO CHEMICAL ATTACK

Moderates group concerned about escalation of tension in Syria

-

THE Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMMF) has urged the United Nations and the international community to probe allegations that chemical weapons were used in Syria, and expressed concern over airstrikes against the country.

GMMF executive chairman and chief executive officer, Datuk Dr Nasharudin Mat Isa, said efforts should be made to seek peaceful resolutions in the conflict.

“GMMF, while outraged by continuous reports of the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian Arab Republic, is deeply alarmed by the recent events that have resulted in United States President Donald Trump’s announcement of airstrikes on Syria.

“We are deeply concerned for the risks of further escalations not only in Syria, but the region and beyond.”

Nasharudin said GMMF agreed with the statement by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who stated that the situation had become a threat to international peace and security, with Syria representing the most serious of threats, and that there was no military solution to the conflict.

“GMMF, thus, implores the UN and the relevant bodies within the international community to not only undertake the required investigation into the allegations, but to also redouble efforts in providing viable solutions and dedicated mechanisms in order to bring about peaceful resolutions to the on-going conflict.

“We extend our heartfelt prayers to the people of Syria, who have suffered long enough, and continue to be affected by the conflict.”

Yesterday, US, British and French forces launched missile attacks against targets in Syria in response to a poison gas attack that killed dozens of people in the town of Douma last week.

Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stopped its use of chemical weapons.
