Student gets bashed up at his birthday celebration

-

SHAH ALAM: It was a different sort of birthday “bash” for a Form Five student here as he is believed to have allowed himself to be beaten up by a group of friends to celebrate his birthday.

A 29-second video recording, which went viral on social media, shows at least eight students singing “Happy birthday to you” to a student before assaulting him.

He was kicked, punched and hit with broomsticks in the incident that occurred last month.

It is understood by the New Straits Times Press that this is a tradition at the school.

However, the school’s management has denied this.

They commented that throwing flour was a popular ritual among students who celebrated their birthdays.

But this incident was brought to their attention only last Friday when the video went viral.

Although school authorities have been unable to contact the teenager, a report has been sent to the Selangor Education Department.

Shah Alam district police chief assistant commissioner Baharudin Mat Taib, however, said no reports were lodged on the incident.

“Police have yet to receive a report.

“But if there is a report, we will investigate before taking action.”

Deputy Education Minister Datuk P. Kamalanathan, when met after attending “Carnival #Stand Together” in Setia Alam, said the ministry had instructed the state education department to conduct an investigation and submit a report on the incident.

“We are getting reports on the incident and when the investigation is completed, we will inform of its progress,” Kamalanathan said.
