AirAsia X to suspend KL-Teheran route for second time

- Bilqis Bahari

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia X Bhd will suspend its Kuala LumpurTeheran flights, with the last flight taking off from here on April 20.

This will be the second suspension of the route since 2012.

AirAsia X chief executive officer Benyamin Ismail told NST Business the suspension was because of the United States’ plan to re-impose sanctions against Iran.

NST Business understands that last Thursday was the final day of work for at least five employees of the AirAsia X office in Teheran.

Some travellers who received notifications on the flight suspension from AirAsia X said they were informed they could either change their flight dates to an earlier date, retain the value of fare in AirAsia credit account or obtain a full refund.

In January, US President Donald Trump set a May 12 deadline for Britain, France and Germany to fix the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran or he would refuse to extend the US sanctions relief on Iran.

Iran was accused of instilling instability and violence across the Middle East.

The Islamic republic has denied the US allegations and said the country was not interested in any renegotiation of the 2015 deal made by former US president Barack Obama.

The US has warned that any company doing business with Iran would be considered as being indirectly involved in the Middle East instability and funding militant groups in the region.
