Celebrities unite against fake news, cyberbullying
Campaign also highlights dangers of cyberbullying
AGROUP of celebrities came together to address the issue of cyberbullying and fake news through the “Sebar Fakta, Bukan Dusta” (Spread Truth, Not Lies) campaign.
The campaign, which aims to educate the people on their right to protect themselves against cyberbullying and fake news, received support from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
It was launched by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak.
“Fake news and cyberbullying can threaten an individual and we are thankful to the celebrities who have supported this campaign.
“Cyberbullying and fake news can affect every Malaysian, regardless of his status.
“It is important that we address this issue to ensure that this does not become a Malaysian culture,” Salleh said at the launch of the campaign at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre.
The campaign, a brainchild of celebrity-cum-entrepreneur Neelofa, saw 16 celebrities joining hands to boost awareness about cyberbullying and fake news via a public service announcement (PSA).
Among them were Awal Ashaari, Scha Alyahya, Adibah Noor, Joe Flizzow, Caprice, Kavita Sidhu and Miss Universe Malaysia Jane Teoh.
Tall Order Production Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Hans Isaac, who produced the PSA, said the campaign would run until September on social media and mainstream media platforms.
“This campaign is to start something new. We have 30 million people (Malaysians) and even if we reach one per cent of them, it will be enough to reach our target. We want people to think before they repost or write anything on social media.
“Social media users are always using the power of the keyboard to spread negative things, so why not we use it to spread positivity?”
Present were Media Prima Television Networks chief executive officer Johan Ishak and Star Media Group group managing editor and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.
