Lawyers, former DPP to contest three seats
KUALA LUMPUR: A lawyer, Adnan Abu Seman, is among the fresh faces announced by the Federal Territories Barisan Nasional to contest in the 14th General Election (GE14).
Two other new candidates, also professionals, are Seputeh MCA assistant secretary Chan Quin Er and Bukit Bintang Wanita MCA chief Ann Tan Ean Ean.
The announcement was made by FT BN secretary Datuk Rizalman Mokhtar at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.
Adnan, 42, who is Persiaran Kilang Umno branch Youth chief, was elected to fill the hot seat of Bandar Tun Razak, traditionally an MCA seat.
Adnan said he believed his experience as a speaker, lawyer and political analyst would give BN an edge to win votes in GE14.
“I received the letter of appointment today (yesterday).
“After this, I will sit with the team to discuss issues of education and social welfare.
“We aim to improve the standard of education and the number of graduates from Bandar Tun Razak,” said Adnan, who is from Kampung Malaysia Tambahan, Sungai Besi.
Chan, 31, who is a former deputy public prosecutor, acknowledged that she would face a tough challenge from the opposition.
“It is obvious that this is a tough fight. It is not an enviable task, given the past result (in the 13th General Election).
“But, as a first-time candidate and a young woman, when I come out to contest, I not only stand for you and me, but I will stand for the laws that we want to see in this country.
“I stand for the change that we want to see. It is for our generation.”
Tan, 46, who is also a lawyer, promised to go to the ground frequently to get close to the 69,000 voters in the constituency.
Bandar Tun Razak MCA division chairman Datuk Chew Yin Keen said party supporters had accepted that the parliamentary seat would be contested by an Umno candidate and were ready to move on.
“People will feel sad about being rejected. But we must look at the spirit of BN and the party’s agenda.”
Chew was said to have been the MCA choice for the seat.
He pledged that the division would work closely with Umno and other BN component parties in Bandar Tun Razak to ensure the coalition’s victory.
