Chukai candidate Awang, 70, says age is no barrier

-

KUALA TERENGGANU: The four “comeback” candidates named in the Barisan Nasional list for the 14th General Election (GE14) in Terengganu are winnable, even if one of them has turned 70.

The former elected representatives meet all the criteria needed to win, said septuagenarian Datuk Mohamad Awang Tera, one of the four.

Awang was the Chukai assemblyman for two terms.

The other “comeback kids” are Datuk Rosol Wahid, 54, also a two-term assemblyman, in Ajil; 57-year-old Datuk Din Adam (Bukit Besi); and, 53-year-old Datuk Abdul Halim Jusoh (Permaisuri).

Despite being seen as an “old candidate”, Awang said his candidacy was because BN was confident in his potential as a winnable candidate.

“Age is no barrier. If we want to win, then we put the best possible candidate.

“I am grateful for the mandate given to me.

“The party leadership would also have done its homework and would have a strong basis for its choice of candidates for each seat.”

This will be the third time Awang is contesting a general election.

He said, in principle, BN had the potential to take back the Chukai seat, won by Pas’ Hanafiat Mat in the previous general election.

“In Chukai, there are some 4,000 Chinese voters, some 10 per cent of the electorate, so there is a chance,” he added.
