Suspects in Rayyan’s abuse case test negative for drug use

KANGAR: Urine tests on a couple, detained for allegedly causing the death of a six-year-old boy by abusing him, showed negative for drug use.

District police chief Superintendent Wari Kiew said police were still gathering information on the death of Mohamad Rayyan Hidayat Hairil Khan.

“Though the tests came up negative for drugs, we are still questioning the couple. That is all I can say for now as it is still too early in the investigation.”

The suspects — a female relative of Rayyan and her lover — were detained after pathologists at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital found that the boy had died from injuries sustained from suspected abuse.

A post-mortem on Thursday showed he had broken ribs and ruptured intestines.

The New Straits Times Press was made to understand that the lover of Rayyan’s relative is a married man from Sungai Petani, with a child.

Sources said, however, he was getting a divorce and had run off with his four-year-old daughter two months ago. He was said to be living here with his daughter.

His estranged wife found out about his arrest in the media and went to the victim’s house in Kampung Abi Tok Hashim to look for her daughter.

However, it is understood that the man had taken their daughter to a relative’s home in Chemor, Perak, before the couple surrendered themselves to police.
