PM: REJECT OPPOSITION SLANDER

They cannot improve your lives, Najib tells people

- HIDIR REDUAN AND NIK SUKRY RAMLY

THE people have been urged to not fall for the opposition’s slander, which will intensify as the 14th General Election (GE14) looms, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He said they should take no heed of the opposition as it would not be able to improve their lives.

“As May 9 (polling day) nears, do not listen to the slander spread by the opposition as it will not change your lives.

“What use is there in tsunami fitnah (tsunami of lies)? (The opposition) does not depend on anything else. Only BN’s (Barisan Nasional’s) politics are for the people.”

Najib, who is BN chairman and Pekan candidate, was speaking at a state-level event to hand out aid to padi farmers in Merchong Jaya here yesterday.

Present was Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Najib said the opposition’s tendency to slander was seen in how it demonised the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

He said the slander was far from the truth as monies collected from GST were channelled to padi farmers and fishermen.

“I will ensure that everyone enjoys the economic growth. Wealth will be shared with those in need.”

He said contrary to the opposition’s claims, it was not padi farmers who paid GST, as the tax was paid only by those who could afford it.

He said many essential items, such as ikan kembung, rice, eggs, poultry, beef and milk, were not subject to GST.

“Our country has the highest number of zero-rated items.”

He said the BN government’s philosophy was one that brought economic growth.

“If there is no economic growth, then the government would not get much revenue. Then we cannot help farmers, fishermen and others.”

He urged the people to give their mandate to BN to ensure the continuity of policies that benefited everyone, especially those in need.

To cheers from the audience, he promised that the BN government would increase the RM200 special aid (for three months) for padi farmers if BN won the mandate.

He said the government would boost the padi yield per hectare in Pekan from 2.5 tonnes to six tonnes once a RM300 million integrated irrigation system here was completed.

At the event, padi farmers from villages here, Rompin, Kuantan, Maran and Jerantut received aid totalling RM1.4 million.

A total of 779 people received a cost of living allowance and 442 people received the “Touch Point” fisheries input financial aid.
