ATOTAL of 265 candidates are contesting 78 parliamentary and state seats in Selangor in the 14th General Election, including five candidates who will contest two seats each in the state.
Among the big names set to defend their seats are Tan Sri Noh Omar in the Tanjong Karang parliamentary seat, Datuk Seri Azmin Ali in Gombak and Datuk P. Kamalanathan in Hulu Selangor.
Contesting in Selangor for the first time is Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) president Mohamad Sabu, who will defend his party’s seat in Kota Raja.
Barisan Nasional and PKR will clash in 22 parliamentary and 56 state seats in the state, while Pas has fielded candidates in 21 parliamentary and 49 state seats.
Parti Rakyat Malaysia will contest five parliamentary and 13 state seats; Parti Sosialis Malaysia will contest one parliamentary and four state seats; and Parti Alternatif Rakyat in two state seats.
Four independent candidates will contest for the first time, including Toh Sin Wah, who is standing in both the Subang parliamentary and Subang Jaya state seats.
PKR almost lost an opportunity to contest a state seat when the form submission of its candidate, G. Sivamalar, was rejected by the Election Commission returning officer in Kuala Selangor as his MyKad address did not reflect a Selangor address.
However, the coalition fielded a last-minute replacement, Juwairiya Zulkifli.
Nomination day yesterday was marred by the actions of political party supporters, who used drones near nomination centres here and in Bangi.
Two supporters were arrested here and one in Bangi for flouting regulations pertaining to flying drones in a designated area without the consent of the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia.
