Chiam set to make waves in Jementah

- By Nur Zarina Othman

JOHOR BARU: Barisan Nasional candidate Chiam Yok Meng hopes to be voted in for the first time for the Jementah state seat at age 51.

He said MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam was his role model.

“My idol is Datuk Seri (Subramaniam) because he is a very kind person. I have learnt a lot from him.”

Chiam recalls the time when he first met Dr Subramaniam during the 11th General Election (GE11).

“He was the first politician I met 10 to 15 years ago. I helped in his campaign during GE11.”

Chiam, who was a bank clerk, left the industry as a service manager after working for 31 years.

“As a wakil rakyat, I hope to look into the basic needs of the people in my area and continue with what was introduced by Datuk Seri (Dr Subramaniam), which was recently called SEDAP (Segamat Economic Development Action Plan).

“I come from the banking industry, so I can see the potential in this programme.”

He wished some of his friends who have left MCA the very best.

“They can do what they believe is best for them, but for me, I choose Barisan Nasional,” said Chiam, who joined MCA in 2000.

Being a candidate contesting a general election for the first time, Chiam said he would focus on moving forward and winning.

“Maybe I am new, I don’t care. I just go straight in. I just move forward. Set my focus in front.”
