Be critical world-class thinkers, educators told
KANGAR: Educators need to be critical and be world-class thinkers to transform the national education system.
Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail on Saturday said teachers, as important agents in such a process, needed to be ready to change the way they did their duties.
“The transformation of education has to do with boosting the quality of our future generations towards universal thinking and the love of knowledge, integrity and morality, in line with the national education philosophy.”
He was speaking at the launch of the state-level Teachers Day celebration at Dewan Warisan here.
Present were Raja Puan Muda of Perlis Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil, State Secretary Datuk Dr Syed Omar Sharifuddin Syed Ikhsan and state Education director Izmi Ismail.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin said what was needed were 21st century learning methods, which focused more on higher-order thinking skills, compared with a focus on basic understanding of subject matters.
He said the methods could churn out students who were able to question outcomes, think for themselves, take the initiative when needed, were inquisitive and willing to change without being forced.
Tuanku Syed Faizuddin said the Perlis Islamic and Malay Customs Council and the Tuanku Syed Putra Foundation, both headed by him, were prepared to help the state Education Department to boost the state’s education achievements.
He presented the Tokoh Guru Perlis 2018 award to 86-year-old retiree Zain Othman at the event.
