Lam Thye welcomes Dr M’s cabinet line-up
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s announcement of his 15-member cabinet has been welcomed by social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
“The ministers have been appointed by the prime minister after considering their qualifications, merits and abilities to perform their ministerial duties,” he said yesterday.
Even though it was not a full 25-member cabinet, he said the appointees would head key ministries needed to implement policies laid down by the new government to address the people’s needs and expectations.
“The newly-appointed ministers need time to put their respective houses in order, including meeting secretaries-general and heads of agencies and departments under their ministries.
“Once they are done with these briefings, they can start issuing instructions and directives.”
He said civil servants had to play their part as well.
”Civil servants need to serve with full commitment, accountability and integrity to ensure the ministries’ objectives are achieved.”
He said suggestion boxes should be displayed at ministries, departments and agencies to encourage the public to share their suggestions or complaints.
“In line with the government’s focus on administrative accountability and transparency, the ministries, their departments and agencies should address public complaints and act on them.
“They must be sensitive to complaints and suggestions about their departments.”
