Najib dismayed by indiscriminate seizures

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak expressed dismay at the indiscriminate manner of the authorities seizing items at his family’s two residential units.

His lawyer, Datuk Harpal Singh Grewal, said the first condominium that police raided was the home of Najib’s son, Ashman, while the second was the home of his daughter, Gina (and her family).

“In the first condominium, which is occupied by Ashman, police seized personal items, such as watches and a laptop owned by his assistant.

“They also seized Ashman’s mobile phone, iPad and laptop. All the items are for Ashman’s work.

“At the raid on Gina’s condominium, only the housekeeper was at home at the time.

“It came as a shock as the items seized were either items they bought personally, or gifts presented to them years ago.”

The raids were conducted at Tower A, Pavilion Residences, in Jalan Raja Chulan here.

Harpal said it was surprising that the authorities seized Gina’s wedding gifts without attempting to make any distinction between items.

“Authorities also seized shoes and baby clothes the couple bought for their child.

“Nevertheless, Najib and his family will continue to provide their full cooperation to the police in their investigation.”

Ashman and Gina had visited the Federal Commercial Crime Department to apply to have their personal belongings returned. Najib’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, hopes that the authorities will respect the process of law in the course of their investigations to avoid any premature judgment by the public.

Rosmah said recent incidents appeared to have been done to generate public anger towards her family.

She said the inquiry process the family was going through appeared to be “doubtful”, as there was information leakages to social media, especially on details concerning the seized items.

“The authorities should not have played a role in the rise of numerous criticism and insults on social media, and instead, abide by the law and act professionally when carrying out their duties.”
