Foreigner who attacked cops gunned down

KUALA LUMPUR: A foreigner with a criminal background who attacked the police with a parang in Jalan Memanda 10, Ampang Jaya, here, on Friday night, was shot dead.

In the 11.55pm incident, the suspect, who boarded a Toyota Vios with four accomplice­s, was said to had been trying to escape from police.

They were believed to be involved in a robbery involving a local man with an estimated loss of US$150,000 (RM595,800).

It is learnt that police from the Kuala Lumpur Serious Crimes Division (D9) located the suspect’s car.

While police were attempting to arrest him, the suspect accelerate­d the vehicle to escape.

Two suspects were arrested and two escaped.

Selangor Criminal Investigat­ions Department chief Senior Assistant Commission­er Fadzil Ahmat said in their effort to escape, one suspect attacked the police using a parang, causing injuries. “The police then fired several gunshots towards the suspect.

“The suspect was confirmed dead at the scene and the case is being investigat­ed under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.”

Sources said the group robbed victims during foreign currency trading.

“They will deceive the victim by offering to sell US dollars at a lower rate than the market price, or buy it at a higher rate.”
