THE government does not want the proposed appointment of Tommy Thomas as the attorney-general to deteriorate into a “constitutional crisis” between Pakatan Harapan and the Conference of Rulers.
Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said he hoped the Federal Government and Istana Negara could find an amicable solution to the contentious issue.
“I was told that the Conference of Rulers will hold a meeting and perhaps this will resolve this issue, which has to be decided by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“As for cabinet ministers, we will fully support the prime minister (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad),” he said during a press conference after a briefing at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters here yesterday.
Present was Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.
Muhyiddin was commenting on Thomas’ proposed appointment as the attorney-general to replace Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali, who was asked to go on onemonth leave.
It was reported that the palace had rejected the proposal.
Muhyiddin said it was important to end the A-G impasse, adding that it was a vital step towards ensuring that the rule of law was upheld.
“We know there are issues and big problems in front of us.
“So if this (A-G issue) can be resolved properly based on provisions in the Constitution, I think this matter will not be protracted.
“I don’t want this to become a prolonged crisis.”
