ALLOW DEBATE ON RUU355, GOVT URGED

It is not a back-door method to implement hudud, says Pas deputy president

PAS hopes that the new Federal Government will give it a chance to debate the private member’s bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act, or RUU355, in the upcoming parliamentary sitting.

Its deputy president, Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, hoped the Pakatan Harapan government would view the matter in another perspective, instead of saying it was a back-door method to implement hudud.

“Pas intends to put right the current system so that it is in accordance with the requirements of syarak (Islamic principles).

“At the moment, the system adopted by the syariah court is not in line with this. (But) if the PH government wants to postpone our efforts, it is their right (to do so).

“But how long do they plan to do so?

“PH needs to look at this issue holistically. This is not hudud, but an enhancement to the existing (syariah) law. It is done so that it will be a lesson to the perpetrators,” he said at the Kelantan Pas Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Sultan Muhammad V Stadium here.

In April, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia scheduled the RUU355 debate to be held in the next Dewan Rakyat session in July.

The bill, tabled by Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on May 26, 2016, aims to strengthen the powers of syariah courts.
