Raising funds through run

-

STUDENTS and lecturers from the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) programme at Sunway College raised funds for Paws Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) this year through the AUSMAT I-Care Run 2018 recently.

The event comprised a charity run of approximately 7km around Sunway City and a bazaar at the Sunway campus. The AUSMAT I-Care Run attracted more than 600 participants.

AUSMAT students also served as volunteers at the event in various capacities, such as first aid providers, photographers and route marshals as well as manning registration and bazaar booths.

Profits will be channelled to PAWS, a nonprofit animal shelter in Petaling Jaya. The shelter receives the surrender of unwanted dogs and cats, which are vaccinated, dewormed, neutered or spayed before being put up for adoption.

André Loh-Max, an animal lover who came in first in the run said he participated because he wanted to contribute to a good cause. The boxer and mixed-martial arts (MMA) fighter said he felt great about his win. He is in his first semester of the AUSMAT programme.

The organising committee for the event comprised AUSMAT lecturers, who were assisted by the AUSMAT Student Council, with help from the campus security and auxiliary police.

AUSMAT Student Council president Yap Yi June said teamwork and communication were vital in the planning and execution of the I-Care Run.

For Yap, communication is an important component to get things done. The former student of Cempaka International School learned to improve her time-management skills as she had to balance her studies and her role in the Student Council.

Olivia Bong Kah Wai, also in the first semester of the AUSMAT programme and AUSMAT Student Council secretary, said the team sent out e-mails and went from doorto-door to seek sponsors.

“I have three dogs at home, so when I found out we were supporting PAWS, I was excited. We are looking forward to collaborating with other non-governmental organisations in the future,” said the former student of SMK (P) Sri Aman in Petaling Jaya.

“It was amazing to witness the buzz at 7am on a Saturday. Kudos to our organising chair, senior lecturer Hanushia Palpanavan, and her team, and the AUSMAT Student Council for raising awareness about PAWS and making the event a memorable day for AUSMATES!!” said Vanitha Satchithanadan, director of the AUSMAT Programme.
